About Elling Gold Exchange

Elling Gold Exchange was established in the old Elling Bank in 1993. The Elling Bank was established in 1864 under the Banking House of Nowland and Weary. In 1873 Henry Elling purchased the bank and found it very profitable to buy and sell gold secured from the rich hills that made Virginia City famous. In 1875 Henry Elling installed a large ornate vault in the bank to safeguard the gold. Today Elling Gold Exchange still brokers gold found in the Virginia City area. This practice makes the old ornate vault the oldest vault in the United States still used for its original purpose.

At Elling Gold Exchange we specialize in designer jewelry using Montana stones. The beautiful red garnet comes from the Ruby Reservoir near Virginia City. The Ruby Valley got its name from this stone. Prospectors thought they had found rubies, instead they had found red garnets.

We use Montana sapphires found in two main deposits, Phillipsburg and the Missouri River near Helena. The sapphires allow for much creativity in designs because they come in all colors. That's right, sapphires are not always blue. In fact, a ruby is just a red sapphire.

Yogo sapphires also come from Montana. They are found in the geographic center of the state and are distinguished from other sapphires because they are the only sapphires in the world that are not heat-treated.. Yogos are world renowned and have found their way into the British Crown Jewels; the center stone of Princess Diana's engagement ring was reported to be from the famous Yogo Sapphire Mine. Elling Gold Exchange is second to none when it comes to its Yogo inventory.
